Veterinary Orthopaedic Devices

Fusion Implants is a company that produces veterinary orthopaedic implants for small animals. Our first product line is implants and associated instruments used for corrective surgery to mitigate the gait impediments cause by rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament in the hind leg of dogs. Our product is manufacture by a method of 3D printing (Selective Laser Melting) as it allows us the freedom of design not afforded by conventional manufacturing processes, so we can create a combination of porous and solid regions in our titanium implants to satisfy both the biological requirements to allow bone ingrowth into the porous regions to secure the implant in its location, and solid regions to provide the necessary strength to support the load on the hind leg when the dog is more active.

What prompted you to develop it?

Fusion Implants is a spin-off company from the University of Liverpool, and is exploiting technology (in the veterinary sector) that was developed in conjunction with a major company providing orthopaedic implants to hospitals world-wide. This technology is patent protected and the basic theme is the ability to create implant designs which are based on a physiological solution for the permanent fixation of the implants to host bone. The processes employed, and the products produced are made to exceptionally high standards.

Is it in production or use?

Our first product, the “Fusion TTA” for Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) was launch on a limited basis 12 months ago. During this time we have implanted over 250 devices. We have also created an IPAD Application which can be downloaded free of charge from Apple stores which allows the surgeon to plan their surgery and aids in the selection of the appropriate implant size (based on radiographs). We will be holding further training courses through this year to instruct the vets on our preferred procedures.

Who inspires you?

The core team in Fusion Implants comprises 3 highly regarded veterinary surgeons, 2 engineers expert in SLM technology and biomedical engineering, a design engineer and 2 external consultants with significant experience in the medical device industry. The synergy which exists within this small core of people is an inspiration in itself. The idea that we are able to use state-of-the-art methods to design and produce animal implants is a major plus for the industry, and we believe this will translate across into other products.

What do you hope to achieve in developing this innovation?

It is the intention of Fusion Implants to develop a commercial business supplying veterinary implants and associated instruments into a global market. The Fusion TTA implant is our first step along this road and we are now in a position to increase our sales into a larger and wider market which include overseas territories. Additionally, we have identified further products which we intend to bring on board. The timing of these explorations will be dependent on SME funding.
