Extreme Low Energy

Extreme Low Energy (ELe®) is an innovator of power infrastructures. Our technologies enable super-efficient power management, delivering energy cost and carbon emission reductions of at least 70% for a host of electronic devices, including PCs and monitors.


ELe Computing provide a range of low energy solutions offering customers a robust and media rich computing environment without the carbon impact and associated energy costs, or the compromises associated with tablet or thin client based solutions. As an example three Intel™ Quad core desktops can be powered for the equivalent energy usage of a 60W light bulb. ELe is able to support customers with or without a mains electrical supply.

What prompted you to develop it?

Since the early days of electricity, transmission was globally standardised on AC (Alternate Current) based power and until relatively recently has met our needs. However, in today’s world of computers and mobile phones, which require DC (Direct Current) power, this method of transmission has become extremely inefficient. Extreme Low Energy (ELe) technologies cut out the wasteful AC/DC conversion process with an innovative DC based power infrastructure and a new generation of low energy, DC powered devices including computers. The whole ELe philosophy has been built on identifying and removing energy waste with a view of reducing cost and carbon impact. 

Is it in production or use?

ELe was founded in July 2014, since then the technology has been developed, proven as a concept and is currently being commercialised into pilot schemes in both the UK and across Africa. In the UK, successful deployments have taken place at St Jerome’s Primary School and Bexley Business Academy, which has been successfully running for over 12 months. The first South African installation was completed in January at Kyalami Beaulieu College in Johannesburg. A fully off-grid demonstration cabin in a Johannesburg township community will be installed in May 2016. Ongoing commercial opportunities under discussion include academy trusts, primary schools, universities, NGO community projects, call centres, security and banks.

What do you hope to achieve in developing this innovation?

ELe hopes to develop a successful sustainable business employing people from the local Merseyside area.  

In the UK, the ELe retrofit solution utilises the existing cabling infrastructure; no rewiring is required so the solution can be installed with minimal work. Likewise the ELe new build potential is substantial as it changes the way buildings are designed for maximum efficiency and return. ELe offers a richer computing environment, alongside its unique and innovative approach to energy infrastructure utilising only DC power – a huge shift from the norm, even LED lighting use AC/DC transformers which are completely unnecessary! ELe looks to reduce energy usage from ICT and other electronic devices by utilising the ELe power infrastructure, thus reducing spend, addressing power shortages and reducing carbon. 

Other advances such as minimal noise and heat generation, no need to PAT test, replacement of inefficient UPS technology and the removal of cables increasing flexibility offer value versus current practice.In the export market the ELe technologies can, for the first time, accelerate educational and commercial programs for developing countries by enabling access to computers and other devices without the need for mains power. Importantly the ELe devices are designed to require less energy, reducing the energy generation demand, the current practice is to send old, energy draining technology which requires much more energy generation.
