Here comes innovation

Care Aware International Limited

Education and Training

We provide education and training to tradespeople. Our CARE AWARE® training is an original and exciting development enabling people living with dementia (PLWD) to get the best and safest service from tradespeople and related organisations. We have developed: · A suite of tools in a unique ‘toolkit’ designed to educate, train and guide a tradesperson to understand dementia and learn how to engage and work in a professional · manner · A photo ID card and registration number known as the “I am CARE AWARE®” card scheme · A register of individual tradespeople/businesses who are CARE AWARE® Aims: · Improve the lives of people with dementia and their carers. · Support and protect the tradesperson. · Support businesses to become ‘mature’ in how they practice and engage PLWD and become socially responsible organisations. · Enhance corporate social responsibility, safeguarding, improved social value and compliance with the Equality Act 2010. We believe our model is an exemplar in how society should be inclusive to PLWD and other disabilities.

What prompted you to develop it?

Firstly, there are important societal issues and needs of people with dementia such as:
·         85% of people living with dementia want to stay in their own home
·         PLWD want to continue to make their own decisions and in addition, want to see less stigma of dementia and in our experience, we recognise that PLWD are financial vulnerable so we want to reduce potential financial abuse.
We were exploring to see how we could support a better customer care initiative within the construction industry and realised no one anywhere in the world is providing a recognised comprehensive system like ours.  Gathering support from stakeholders such as dementia user groups, Alzheimer’s Society, TIDE (Together In Dementia Everyday) and Liverpool John Moore’s University provide us with a great incentive and commitment to develop it further and put it into practice.

Is it in production or use?

Yes – our training went live in the Winter of 2017 and so far we have only had one building company sign up.

Who inspires you?

We are inspired by the people living with dementia and their carers. It inspires us how they cope with just living day to day, often with no support. If we can take a small part of society (e.g. tradespeople) train them in dementia, ensure that they work to a code of conduct and provide safeguarding as the foundation of their practice then we hope this will in some small part pay back the inspiration PLWD and their carers give to us and to society.

What do you hope to achieve in developing this innovation?

Firstly, we hope to get enough tradespeople to formally evaluate our training and proof of concept.  Secondly, we will adapt/adjust as our findings indicate.  Thirdly, we hope to use the evidence from the evaluation (from both PLWD and tradespeople) to publish and demonstrate this important behaviour change and response by society to some of our most vulnerable members of the community.  We want to take this concept and develop it in other areas (in fact we are currently developing it in areas for older people and people living with a visual impairment).
