NeedleSmart is a globally unique product range that destroys contaminated medical sharp waste at the point of use, enabling a safer working environment for the Healthcare Professional, a direct cost saving and potential to create sustainable recycling.
NeedleSmart has developed a market-leading, patented technology, that heats hypodermic needles into a molten state prior to compressing it into a ball. The process takes just a fraction of a second to create a safe, sealed sphere of sterile metal that is no longer sharp. We currently have 3 devices, NeedleSmart Pro, NeedleSmart Phlebotomy and a new hand held device for use in a home environment.
Our CEO Cliff Kirby was introduced to the problems and costs around needle disposal within the healthcare sector some time ago. Having a background in design and development Cliff believed that the fundamental solution lay in the disposal process not with the needle itself. Many Companies had invested significant monies in creating safety needles that while addressing some elements of the problem added significant cost burden to the process and does not truly solve the problem. Cliff went about developing a process that would destroy the needle before disposal without changing the needle that is absolutely fit for purpose. Prior to jumping into the development process Cliff spent his free time understanding the issue, the market, and identifying the market size. With each fact uncovered, the market opportunity and need grew exponentially.
Our product is currently in final development.
Needle Stick Injuries are an increasing problem throughout the world as each year globally 12,000,000,000 injections will be administered and of these up to 3,000,000 Needle Stick injuries will occur. Of healthcare workers suffering a Needle Stick Injury across the UK, 30% will contract Hepatitis B, 3% will contract Hepatitis C and 0.3% will contract HIV / AIDS.
With NeedleSmart we hope to vastly reduce the number of NSI’s occurring and subsequently the unnecessary contraction of diseases to healthcare workers.
Due to the compression and sterilisation of the needle, our products also offer waste to be disposed as non hazardous rather than hazardous clinical waste, meaning we could provide considerable cost savings to organisations such as the NHS.
